Arrows Win Second Straight G-MAC Regular Season Championship

The Ursuline College basketball team clinched its second straight Great Midwest Athletic Conference Regular Season championship with an 89-73 road win over Davis & Elkins Saturday.

The Arrows will host the six-team G-MAC Tournament for the second straight year beginning on March 2. Ursuline has won 25 straight conference games dating back to last season including 13 straight this season.

Ursuline and Davis & Elkins were tied 6-6 after the two teams traded baskets early in the first quarter. The Arrows used an 8-0 run by sophomores Natalie Koenig and Brigan Wymer to push out to a 15-8 lead. Wymer had a pair of layups and Koenig hit a three-pointer during the run

The Senators pulled to within four at 22-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Junior Laney Lewis extended the lead to 26-20 before Senators senior Stephanie Wooten hit a three-pointer to make it 26-23 midway through the second. With the game tied 28-28 with 4:00 to play in the quarter, senior Erica Huber hit a three-pointer to make it 31-28.

Huber passed Laura Campbell for third all-time in program history with 1,444 career points.

Ursuline led 38-34 at the intermission.

Koenig continued her surge in the third quarter as she hit back-to-back triples to make it 44-36 forcing a Senators timeout. Once again, D&E battled back to within a bucket at 44-42 before Huber hit another three to make it 47-42. The Senators answered with a 6-0 run to take their first lead since the first quarter at 48-47 but Huber answered with triple to make it 50-48.

The Arrows took a 58-55 lead to the fourth quarter.

Koenig started the fourth quarter just as she did the third with a three to make it 61-57. After her seventh three of the game made it 68-60, Koenig went to the rim for an uncontested layup to push out to a double-digit lead at 70-60.

The Senators battled their way back to within nine but once again Huber and Koenig came up with key triples to make it 80-67 with under three minutes to play.

Ursuline shot 45 percent (34-for-75) from the field and were 14-for-38 from three while Davis & Elkins shot 45 percent (26-for-57) and went 8-for-21 from the arc. The Arrows won the rebounding battle 43-36 and forced 21 turnovers.

Koenig led Ursuline with 35 points on 12-for-20 from the floor and 9-for-16 from three-pointers. The 35-point performance was the most in a game since Campbell scored 37 back in 2012. Lewis finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds on 11-for-18 from the floor while also dishing out five assists. Huber added 17 points on 5-for-15 from behind-the-arc.

The Arrows will head home to take on Bluefield State on Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM before a tough road contest at Malone on Saturday evening at 7:00 PM to conclude the regular season.
