The Ursuline College softball team earned a much-needed split with the visiting Davis & Elkins Senators on a chilly Saturday afternoon. The Arrows won game one 3-2 and fell 7-3 in game two.
Ursuline played from in front in game one after a two-run second inning. Freshman
Sadie Jones started the frame off with a base hit and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by freshman
Hannah Trent. With one out, freshman
Alicia Smith lined a single right-center to score Jones to make it 1-0. Sophomore
Gina Rosshirt followed with a base hit that scored Smith to make it 2-0.
The Senators tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning and it would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth. Junior
Brigitte Snow singled to start the inning and stole second base. After a walk to Jones, Trent came through in the clutch with a base hit to center field to score the go-ahead run.
Junior
Brittany Humbel (6-7) picked up the win with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while allowing just two hits and striking out two. She also did not issue a walk. Rosshirt started and allowed two runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings while also striking out a pair.
The Senators took game two 7-3.
The two teams will conclude the regular season on Sunday afternoon with two games beginning at 1:00 PM.
