Arrows Split Double Header With Salem on Thursday

The Ursuline College softball team split the opening two games of their double header at Salem International on Thursday. Ursuline won game one 2-1 and fell in game two 4-3.

In game one, Salem International got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Monika Garabedian drove in the first run of the game with a base hit to center field.

Tiger's starter Kayla Lynch kept the Arrows bats quiet until the fourth inning when sophomore Gina Rosshirt started the inning with a single. After junior Brigitte Snow was hit by a pitch, senior Alison Porter reached on a fielder's choice to give Ursuline its first scoring threat of the game. Junior Brittany Humbel ripped a single down the left field line to score Snow and Rosshirt and put the Arrows on top 2-1.

Humbel worked the final two innings of hitless relief while striking out four. Rosshirt (3-6) picked up the win with five innings of work. She allowed one run on four hits while striking out six and walking a pair.

In game two, it was Ursuline getting out to the first inning lead after freshman Sadie Jones singled with one out and stole second base to move into scoring position. After Snow singled, a throwing error by the catcher on a stolen base attempt allowed Jones to score the first run to make it 1-0. Humbel followed with an RBI single to score Snow and make it 2-0. Freshman Hannah Trent picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to score Porter and make it 3-0.

The Tigers chipped away at the lead by adding a run in the bottom of the first inning and a single run in the fifth inning.

Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Humbel retired the first two batters before Katie Chryssofos hit a walk-off two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Tigers a 4-3 win.

Humbel took the loss allowing two runs in 2 2/3 inning of work on six hits while striking out five. Rosshirt did not allow a hit over 3 1/3 innings but did walk two and struck out five. Jones started and worked 2/3 of an inning while allowing a run on two hits.

The Arrows and Tigers will play two games on Friday afternoon to conclude the four-game series starting at 1:00 PM. Live stats will be available at www.ursulinearrows.com.
