The Ursuline College softball team pounded out a season-high 21 hits and scored 14 runs in a 14-3 win in game one of a road double header at Ohio Valley on Saturday. The Arrows fell in game two 5-4.
The Arrows trailed 1-0 until the fifth inning when sophomore
Leah Leshnack came into score on a passed ball after starting the inning with a base hit to left. Ursuline took the lead for the first time in the game later that inning after a single by junior
Brittany Humbel followed by a throwing error from Ohio Valley allowed junior
Brigitte Snow to score to make it 2-1. Freshman
Hannah Trent delivered an RBI base hit, one of her five runs driven in on the game, to make it 3-1 after five.
The Fighting Scots closed to within a run at 4-3 before the Arrows offense exploded for 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning. Snow started the inning with a base hit and came around to score on a single from senior
Alison Porter to make it 4-2. With two runners on, Trent connected on her first collegiate home run, a three-run blast, to make it 7-2. Junior
Mackenzie Lebeda followed with a solo-blast to make it 8-2. Senior
Danielle Almodiel drove in a run after a double by junior
Carly Hoffner to make it 9-2 and Snow added another RBI base hit to make it 10-2. Trent drove in two more runs later in the inning with a base hit to give her four RBI in the inning.
Humbel (5-2) picked up the win with a complete game performance allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out a season-high nine batters and did not issue a walk. Trent finished game one 3-for-5 with five runs driven in while Snow added four hits and scored three runs in five at-bats.
In total, the Arrows line-up that had three or more hits and four players score two or more runs.
In game two, the Arrows jumped in front in the first inning when Snow homered on a 2-1 pitch to make it 1-0.
Ohio Valley answered with a four-run third inning to take a 4-2 lead. Ursuline got a run back in the top of the fourth inning after Lebeda doubled to center field and came around to score on an error.
The Fighting Scots held a 4-2 lead going to the top of the seventh before the Arrows offense rallied once again. Almodiel started the inning with a single and Leshnack followed with a base hit. After Rosshirt grounded out to advance both runners, Snow drove in a pair of runs with a single to tie the game 4-4.
After Ursuline could not add onto its lead in the top of the inning, Ohio Valley got back-to-back singles in the seventh inning before a Brown walk-off double gave the Scots the 5-4 win.
In game two, Humbel tossed four innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one. Rosshirt (2-6) took the loss by allowing a run on four hits over 2 1/3 innings of work.
Snow finished game two 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored and a solo-home run in the first inning. In the two games, Snow went 10-for-16 from the plate with six runs scored and five RBI.
Ursuline will travel back to West Virginia next week to start a series with Salem International on Thursday.
