The Ursuline College softball team opened conference play with a spilt of a double header on the road at Ohio Valley University on Friday. The Arrows fell 6-4 in game one and rallied to win the second game 5-3.
In game one, Ursuline fell behind 6-0 before sophomore
Leah Leshnack broke up the shut out with an RBI single to score freshman
Hannah Trent to make it 6-1. The Arrows continued to rally in the seventh inning after sophomore
Gina Rosshirt doubled to right field to score freshman
Sadie Jones to cut the deficit to 6-2.
With two runners on, junior
Brittany Humbel drove in a pair with a single to left field to pull the Arrows to within 6-4 but Ohio Valley closed out the game to take game one of the series.
Jones (2-3) took the loss for Ursuline allowing three runs, two of which were earned on two hits while walking one and striking out one. Rosshirt pitched the final 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned on seven this while striking out three and walking two.
Rosshirt finished game one 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run as well as scored one. Trent was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Humbel drove in pair of runs.
In game two, Ohio Valley once again got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Arrows got two runners aboard in the fourth inning and Humbel delivered an RBI double to center field to give Ursuline its first lead of the day at 2-1. Trent followed by reaching base on an error by the Ohio Valley defense to extend the lead to 3-1.
Still leading 3-1 in the fifth, junior
Brigitte Snow drove in a run with a single to make it 4-1. After Ohio Valley pulled to within a run in the fifth inning, junior
Mackenzie Lebeda reached on an error to allow senior
Alison Porter to score an insurance run for the Arrows to make it 5-3.
Humbel (3-2) picked up the win with four innings of relief work. She allowed two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking two. Rosshirt started and allowed just one run on three hits in three innings of work.
The two teams will play the final two games of the series tomorrow afternoon starting at 1:00 PM.
