The Ursuline College basketball team earned a share of its first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship with a 98-79 road win over Alderson Broaddus on Saturday afternoon.
The Arrows opened the game on a 7-2 run after a pair of layups from freshman
Brigan Wymer and a three-pointer from fellow freshman
Natalie Koenig. Wymer followed with another three-pointer and sophomore
Camryn Hill scored in the paint as the Arrows built a 12-4 lead.
Ursuline built a 17-8 lead with 4:57 to play in the first half but Alderson Broaddus came back to end the quarter on a 16-12 run to cut the deficit to 29-24 after one.
Freshman
Christiana Jefferson buried a three-pointer to start the second quarter as the Arrows extended to a 32-24 lead. Hill followed with another three-pointer to push the lead to 35-26. Jefferson closed the second quarter with a layup to beat the buzzer to put the Arrows in front 47-39 at the intermission.
The Arrows saw their lead quickly cut to five at 53-48 early in the third quarter before going on a 9-0 run sparked by a Wymer three and a pair of layups from Huber and redshirt sophomore
Laney Lewis. Ursuline went onto outscore Alderson Broaddus 21-5 over the next three minutes to build the lead to 72-51 late in the third.
Alderson Broaddus opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to close within 83-68 with 6:14 to play in the game. Seniors Mariah James and Terra Mackenzie then hit back-to-back triples to close the Battlers within 11 at 85-74 with 5:05 to play in the game. Ursuline finished the game on 13-4 run to seal the win.
Ursuline shot 51 percent (35-for-69) from the field and went 10-for-23 from behind-the-arc. The Arrows went 18-for-23 from the free throw line and out rebounded the Battlers 43-30. Alderson Broaddus shot 45 percent (30-for-67) on the game and went 11-for-23 from three. The Battlers finished 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
The Arrows had six players score in double figures led by Wymer who finished with 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting. She also went 4-for-5 from three point territory and had three steals to go along with one assist. Hill and Jefferson finished with 15 points each while Koenig and Lewis added 11 each.
Ursuline will host the G-MAC Tournament starting on Thursday evening. The Arrows earned a first-round bye and will play the winner of the 4/5 game on Friday at 5:00 PM.
