The Ursuline College basketball team fell to BYU-Hawaii 62-57 on Saturday afternoon in the opening of a two-game road trip in Hawaii on Saturday afternoon.
The Arrows and Seasiders both got off to slow starts on offense in the first quarter before Ursuline got a three-pointer from junior
Camryn Hill to take an 8-5 advantage. BYU-Hawaii closed the quarter on a 9-5 run of its own to lead 14-13 after one.
Ursuline trailed by as many as five at 22-17 in the second quarter before senior
Erica Huber connected on a pair of free throws and a lay-up to cut the deficit to one with 5:00 to play in the first half. The Arrows trailed 28-25 at the intermission.
The Arrows shot just 9-for-33 (27 percent) from the field and went 0-for-9 from behind the arc in the first half.
The offense picked up in the second half when Huber connected on a jumper in transition followed by a layup from redshirt junior
Laney Lewis to give Ursuline a 31-28 advantage in the opening minutes of the third. Once again, BYU-Hawaii rallied to take a 38-36 lead after the third.
With 4:20 remaining in the game, BYU-Hawaii opened up its largest lead of the game at 51-44. Ursuline got a spark off the bench from freshman
Carly Koncz who hit back-to-back three-pointers to close the gap to 51-50 with 3:30 to play. The Seasiders were able to get a couple of second chance baskets on their offensive end and hit free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
The Arrows shot 30 percent (20-for-66) from the field on the game and went 2-for-21 from three while BYU-Hawaii shot 39 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle 49-39. Ursuline forced 22 turnovers and had 12 steals and also went 15-for-21 from the free throw line.
Sophomore
Brigan Wymer led Ursuline with 18 points on 6-for-16 from the field in 36 minutes of play. Hill finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Huber also added 11 points.
The Arrows will take on Hawaii Pacific University in their final game in Hawaii on Sunday evening. Tip-off is set for 11:00 PM EST/6:00 PM HST.
