Ed Karasek's team won Wednesday's (April 8) contest by a score of 15-5 to pick up its first win of the 2015 season.
Ursuline is now 1-7 overall while the Barons, losers in five straight, dipped to 1-7.
Sophomore Maddie Kipp tied her career-high with five goals, the same number she scored at Trine on March 29, 2014. Freshman Celeste Friel chipped in three scores while sophomores Breana Cervantes, Sarah Kiefer and Grace Savage all scored twice. Sophomore Anika Aberegg scored the other UC goal which was more than enough support to earn sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Cole (four saves) the victory.
Aberegg and Friel were both credited with two assists and Cervantes and Kipp both had helpers as well.
UC scored the first five goals of the game - and all five were scored by a different player. Friel opened the scoring with 23:48 to go in the half and Kiefer follow 2:39 after that. Cervantes scored 52 seconds after Kiefer and then Savage scored 2:06 after her. Kipp's first goal came with 16:54 left in the half and gave UC the five-goal cushion.
Franciscan's Tracy McClelland made it a 5-1 game with a goal 14:43 in but Aberegg and Kipp both answered before McClelland scored again to make it a 7-2 game at halftime.
Margaret Gargulinski and Lauren Noce scored for Franciscan to start the second period and bring the Barons within three but Kiefer countered to extend the lead back to four. Jessica Bestgen beat Cole with 16:38 left which made it an 8-5 game but then the Arrow offense exploded with a 7-0 run to end the game.
Kipp. Friel. Cervantes. Friel. Savage. Kipp. And Kipp again. Then it was back on the bus with a mark in the left column.
The Arrows will re-enter Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday (April 10) when they host
Grand Valley State University (7-4, 2-0 GLIAC) in the home opener at 5:00 p.m. All four of GVSU's losses have come against teams ranked in the top-nine in the country.
Max Radigan is scheduled to call the game on the
Ursuline College Sports Network but plans are still being finalized as the softball team is home at the same time and staff might be short.
