The win, which is Ursuline's third in its last four tries, clinches the Arrows a spot in the GLIAC postseason tournament. Not bad for a team picked to finish last in the conference's preseason poll!
Ursuline is now 2-4 in conference play while Walsh and Alderson Broaddus University are both 1-5. Because of head-to-head victories over Walsh and Alderson Broaddus, UC wins any tiebreaker scenario.
Early on in Sunday's game, it looked like Ursuline might cruise to victory. Sophomore Maddie Kipp scored two goals in the first 4:32, the second of which was assisted by her classmate Anika Aberegg, to make it a 2-0 game in the blink of an eye. Sophomore Natalie Pachinger scored 6:57 into the game to extend the lead to three and then freshman Cydney Bartlett beat Walsh goalkeeper Tia Tyler to grow the margin to four.
Exactly one minute after Bartlett's strike, Walsh's Emma Armour scored to cut into the deficit. Pachinger answered with her second goal of the day and then WU's Steffi Zepp, the team's leading scorer, took a pass from Aly Jajack and beat UC sophomore goalie Lauren Cole to make it a 5-2 game.
Aberegg and Kipp flipped the script as it was Aberegg scoring off the Kipp helper to make it a 6-2 game. Pachinger's third goal of the opening period came on a free position shot and made it 7-2.
Walsh scored a goal while playing up with a player and then both teams scored in the final 36 seconds to make it an 8-4 game at the intermission. The UC goal with: 36 left came from sophomore Breana Cervantes and Jajack scored off a pass from Sarah McCormick with 17 ticks left.
The Cavaliers came out firing to start the second half and quickly scored three unanswered to cut the deficit to one at 8-7.
Ursuline would not be denied and closed the game on a 4-0 run to clinch its spot in the postseason. Aberegg and Bartlett scored on free position shots and then goals from tri-captains Kipp and Pachinger erased any chance of a Walsh comeback.
Both goalkeepers were tested all day and both were superb. Tyler was credited with 16 saves while Cole equaled her season-high with 13 stops. Ursuline outshot Walsh by 11, 35-24.
