Va. - The Ursuline College basketball team executed down the stretch and used a late 7-0 run to come away with a 73-71 road win at Ohio Valley University on Thursday (Feb. 5) night. It was a tight game with neither team ever holding a lead bigger than six points.
With the win, the Arrows snapped their five-game losing streak and improved to 4-18 overall and 3-8 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. OVU has dropped four of five and sits at 5-15 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
Senior forward Emma Ricketts scored 22 points which tied her career-high (Nov. 27, 2013 at Malone). In the first half, she was 7-9 from the floor on her way to 17 points which helped the Arrows go into the break up 35-34.
The Fighting Scots wouldn't go away easily and held a six-point advantage (47-41) with 15:57 to go. OVU was in front until UC sophomore point guard Erica Huber drilled a three to put the Arrows on top 54-53 with just under 12 minutes left to play.
Back and forth they went until senior guard Brianna Woods went on a mini-run that consisted of a jumper and a three-point play which gave UC a 69-66 lead with 3:27 showing on the game clock. After a stop at the other end, Woods assisted on a two-point bucket by freshman forward Madison Schroeder which grew the lead to five.
OVU's Ghameerah McCullers answered with a three-point play of her own to make it a one possession game (71-69) with 2:19 to go.
Neither team hit a field goal from that point on and both clubs added a pair of free throws to decide the final margin. OVU's Logan Webster's last-second jumper was off the
mark and secured the UC victory.
Freshman guard Makayla Rosselot finished with 13 points for UC and Schroeder had nine to go with 11 boards. Huber also scored nine to go with four assists and just one turnover while freshman guard Kristen Curtis chipped in eight points off the bench.
Woods scored all seven of her points in the second half and the other five points came from freshmen Camille Gist (three) and Camryn Hill (two).
Only five players scored for OVU and McCullers led the way with 20. Danielle Dunnagan had 15, as did Angelique Green. Tashiana Hill scored 12 and Amy Brooks chipped in nine.
Each team had 41 rebounds and both clubs turned the ball over 13 times. The Arrows shot the ball much better (44.6 percent to 34.9 percent) and won the game despite hitting two fewer three-pointers and two fewer free throws than the Fighting Scots.
