Become a fan of Ursuline Basketball on FacebookSOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - The Ursuline College basketball program wanted to send seniors Emma Ricketts and Brianna Woods out on a high note but Central State University's tandem of Jasmine Cooper and Iniquia Snell had other ideas as the Marauders knocked off the Arrows, 90-67, to spoil UC's Senior Night.
Despite the loss, the Arrows (8-20, 6-10 G-MAC) got some good news earlier in the day when they learned Kentucky Wesleyan College knocked off Ohio Valley University. The OVU loss meant UC locked up the sixth-seed in next week's Great Midwest Athletic Conference postseason tournament which will be held in Cedarville, Ohio.
Central State, winners in four straight, clinched the fifth-seed with Saturday night's victory. The Marauders will take on fourth-seeded Davis & Elkins College on Thursday (March 5) in the G-MAC quarterfinal round while Ursuline will battle third-seeded Kentucky Wesleyan, the team Ursuline fans were cheering for early on Saturday.
Top-seeded Cedarville University and G-MAC runner-up Trevecca University both earned byes to the semifinal round.
Thursday's quarterfinal game between Ursuline and Kentucky Wesleyan will start at 5:00 p.m. and will be streamed through G-MACSports.com.
On Saturday, Snell and Cooper combined for 39 points in the first half alone to put the Marauders in front 46-33 at the break. Snell was 10-18 from the field and Cooper hit six of her eight shots in the first half so the duo was 16-26 (61.5 percent) with 39 points after just 20 minutes.
Snell slowed down and was 0-4 from the field in the final 20 ticks. Her only two points in the second half came at the free throw line but Cooper scored 11 points in her 15 minutes of second period run.
When all was said and done, both players scored 26 points and Cooper added 10 rebounds and three steals.
Aneisha Hardin scored 12 points off the bench for CSU and Kourtni Perry, the reigning G-MAC Player of the Week, had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
UC sophomore point guard Erica Huber scored a team-high 19 points, one shy of her season-high. She was an efficient 8-16 from the field and added three steals, a few of which went the other way for transition buckets.
Freshman guard Makayla Rosselot scored 13 points and added five rebounds while Ricketts contributed eight points and eight boards in her final "home" game. Woods, the school's all-time leader in assists, tied her career-high with four steals and added five points, three assists and two rebounds in front a pretty good crowd that was packed into Notre Dame College's Murphy Gymnasium.
As a team, the Arrows shot just 34.2 percent (26-76) from the floor while Central State hit 38-70 (54.3 percent). The Marauders dominated the glass in the first half (32-16) and won the overall rebounding battle, 54-35.
The Marauders also had a sizeable advantage in the paint where they outscored the Arrows 56-30. CSU also got 17 points on second chance opportunities while UC had six points on putbacks.
