The Arrows had other ideas.
Ursuline pieced together a 40-17 run over the next 10:18 to make it an 83-82 game. After exerting all that energy to get back in the game, the Arrows had little left in the tank and came up short in their comeback bid, dropping the game 96-88.
With the loss, the Arrows are 3-15 overall and 2-6 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Alderson Broaddus ended its two-game losing streak and improved to 5-10 overall and 3-3 in the G-MAC.
The Battlers were in front 51-31 at halftime after shooting 55.3 percent (21-38) and connecting on eight of their 12 (66.7 percent) three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes.
UC's backcourt tandem of freshman Makayla Rosselot and sophomore Erica Huber heated up in the second half and both scored 14 points in the second half on their way to 20. Freshman forward Madison Schroeder had 10 points and eight rebounds in her 15 minutes of second half action and wound up with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double. It's the second straight game and third time this month that Schroeder has reached double figures in two categories.
Freshman forward Camryn Hill finished with 11 points and her classmates Kristen Curtis (nine) and Kylie Owoc (six) combined for 15 points off the bench.
Alderson Broaddus was led by Rachel Ashley who had a game-high 32 points and 10 rebounds. Sydney Shaffer (16), Erica Brooks (11) and Rachel Mills (30) also scored in double figures. After hitting eight threes in the first period, the Battlers cooled down a bit and were two of eight from beyond the arc in the second stanza while UC hit an impressive seven of 15.
The Battlers held slight advantages in both rebounding (43-37) and turnovers (21-20).
Ursuline is idle from competition until next Saturday (Jan. 24). That's when the Arrows begin a three-game homestand with
Mercyhurst University. That game will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. at
John Carroll University's Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. Max Radigan will call all the action live on the
Ursuline College Sports Network and the
Pizzazz on the Circle Live Stats will also be provided free of charge.
