PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The guests from Alderson Broaddus University used a late rally to get past Ursuline College, 12-10, in UC's home finale on Friday (April 25) afternoon.
UC led 9-6 with 18 minutes left in regulation but the Battlers scored six of the game's final seven goals to earn their first conference win of the season.
The Arrows are now 4-11 overall and 0-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while ABU improved to 2-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
UC found itself down 1-0 when ABU's Chanel Nkounkou scored to put the Battlers up six minutes into the game. UC responded with a 3-0 run thanks to a goal from freshman Bailey Patterson and two scores from her classmate Sarah Kiefer.
ABU stopped the run with another Nkounkou goal but UC came back with another three-goal run (one from freshman Anika Aberegg and two more from Patterson) to grow the lead to 6-2.
Nkounkou's third goal of the game made it a 6-3 contest but Patterson scored with 3:01 left in the first half to make it a 7-3 game at the break.
Picking up where she left off, Patterson opened the second half scoring less than three minutes into the period to put the Arrows up 8-3. ABU put together its first run of the day and rattled off three straight scores before Kiefer's goal with 18:05 remaining extended Ursuline's lead to 9-6.
After Patterson drew her second yellow card of the day with 12:06 left, UC struggled to score. Kiefer's fourth goal of the game was all UC could muster down the stretch and ABU's six strikes in the last 16 minutes propelled the Battlers to a road conference victory.
The Arrows outshot the Battlers 35-23 in the game but ABU held a 13-12 edge in the second half after UC dominated the first 30 minutes.
UC freshman goalkeeper Lauren Cole made five saves while ABU's Paxton Boyer stopped 11 shots.
Ursuline will conclude its inaugural season on Sunday (April 27) with a 3:00 p.m. conference game at
Urbana University.
