DEFIANCE, Ohio A strong first half propelled the Ursuline College lacrosse team to an 8-5 victory at Defiance College on Wednesday (April 16) night.

The Arrows, winners in two straight, are now 4-7 overall while Defiance has dropped four straight and sits at 2-11.

Ursuline jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back. Freshman Bailey Patterson scored a little more than three minutes into the game and her classmate Sarah Kiefer followed with three goals to extend the lead to four.

Defiance's JoNae Apps scored with 6:09 left in the first half to make it a 4-1 game at the intermission but the two teams each found the back of the net four times over the final 30 minutes.

An Apps goal with 23:35 remaining trimmed the lead to two but Patterson countered with a goal to re-up the margin to three. Freshman Hayley Burke scored 81 seconds after Patterson off an assist from classmate Anika Aberegg to make it a 6-2 game.

After a Megan Fields goal brought the Yellow Jackets within three, Kiefer and Burke each scored again to give the Arrows a cushion. Defiance added late goals from Karly Smith and Apps to decide the final margin.

UC freshman goalie Lauren Cole made eight saves to earn her fifth collegiate victory. Her counterpart Galysa Ratterman made nine stops in a losing effort.

Ursuline has a quick turnaround with a game at Grand Valley State University (7-5, 4-0 GLIAC) on Thursday (April 17). That contest will start at 5:00 p.m. and will be covered with free live stats
