PEPPER PIKE, Ohio The Ursuline College lacrosse team played down two players and still knocked off Franciscan University on Monday (April 14) afternoon, 11-8. Both teams had to battle Mother Nature as well after hours of hard rain in the Cleveland area.

The win snapped UC's four-game losing skid and improved the team to 3-7 overall. Franciscan has dropped 10 straight and is 1-12.

Franciscan led 2-0 until freshman Bailey Patterson put Ursuline on the board with 21:22 remaining in the half when her classmate Anika Aberegg set her up. Rookie Sarah Kiefer followed with an Arrow tally to tie the game at two.

The Barons answered to re-take a 3-2 lead but Kiefer countered to tie it up again. Franciscan's leading scorer Tracy McClelland put her team ahead 4-3 with 9:44 left in the first half but Kiefer and Patterson countered with goals to give the Arrows a quick 5-4 advantage.

Franciscan jumped back on top after Lindsay Matthys and Anna Gagnet scored but three straight goals from Aberegg gave UC an 8-6 lead at halftime.

Patterson notched the first goal of the second half, which was just 18 minutes long, 57 seconds into the period. Freshman Grace Savage gave UC a four-goal cushion when she scored with 14:42 left but the Barons wouldn't go away easily.

Lauren Noce scored with 9:16 remaining to make it a 10-7 game and Margaret Gargulinski's goal with 3:42 left cut the deficit to two.

Coach Ed Karasek's team did a nice job of controlling the ball and taking valuable time off the clock. UC ran it all the way down until Savage scored again just before the final horn to give UC an 11-8 victory.

Freshman Lauren Cole made 10 saves, one of which will surely make the highlight reel. Cole was out of the net and came sprinting in to stop what looked like it was going to be an empty net goal.

Ursuline will step out of conference play for a game at Defiance College on Wednesday (April 16). That contest will start at 5:00 p.m. and will be covered with free live stats, available by clicking here
