WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Ursuline College lacrosse program won its debut on Sunday (March 9) afternoon, defeating host Wilmington College by a score of 21-2.
The Quakers slipped to 0-3 on the young year after losses to Beloit (21-7) and Alma (21-3) earlier this week.
Freshman Natalie Pachinger led the Arrows with six goals and an assist while her classmate Anika Aberegg added four goals and a helper.
Rookies Maddie Kipp (who was also credited with an assist), Sarah Kiefer and Grace Savage all chipped in three goals and the other two scores came from freshman Bailey Patterson.
Freshman goaltender Lauren Cole faced 20 shots and made nine stops while earning the first victory of her collegiate career.
"I really want to give a lot of credit to our defense," head coach Ed Karasek said. "They communicated extremely well and had their slides down. I thought we did a nice job of bringing the double teams and in the event our defense did get beat, Wilmington had to deal with Lauren Cole and that's not an easy thing at all."
The Arrows jumped ahead early when Aberegg scored just 1:47 into the game. After Pachinger scored off a Kipp assist, Pachinger set up Aberegg for the third score of the game.
Patterson scored with 26:41 left in the first half before Wilmington finally got on the board on a goal from Loryn Bryson. The Arrows responded with an 8-0 run before Wilmington's Rachel Gutowski scored with 45 seconds left in the opening period to make it a 12-2 game at the break.
Ursuline scored three goals in the first six minutes of the second half to put any hope of a comeback to rest and Cole didn't let anything in over the last 30:45.
The Arrows are idle from competition until March 21st when they pay to a visit to neighborhood rival
Notre Dame College in South Euclid. The Falcons are 2-2 overall and don't play again until March 19th.
