ELKINS, W. Va. – Junior forward Emma Ricketts had a team-high 15 points and pulled down a career-high 19 boards to tie the Ursuline College single game mark but it wasn't enough at Davis & Elkins College on Saturday (Feb. 1) as the host Senators won, 78-71.
Besides Ricketts, only senior Natalie Cook has grabbed 19 rebounds in a single game. She accomplished the feat against Ohio Valley University on December 19, 2012.
In addition to the 15 points from Ricketts, freshman guard Erica Huber scored 13 points. Freshman guard Jenny Grigsby chipped in 11 points and senior guard Katie Cappello, still working her way back from injury, had a season-high 11 in her 29 minutes off the bench. Junior guard Brianna Woods had 10.
Nonetheless, the Arrows fell to 9-10 overall and an even 5-5 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Senators, now winners in six straight games, are inching closer to the .500 mark at 10-11 overall but are an impressive 7-2 in conference action. Jason Asbell's team is red hot and was playing with supreme confidence after knocking off No. 22 Edinboro University 70-67 on Thursday (Jan. 30) night
D&E won the first meeting between these two teams 76-72 at John Carroll University on Dec. 14, 2013. Ricketts had 20 points and 13 rebounds in that game for her first career double-double and added two more before today's effort.
Ursuline took good care of the basketball in the first half, committing just five turnovers, and took a 38-37 lead into the break, thanks in large part to 11 points and seven rebounds from Ricketts. UC came out and built the lead to six after a three-pointer from Woods and a Ricketts jumper in the paint.
The Arrows led 51-49 with 14:32 to go after a Cappello three-ball but D&E's Sharmaine Baker answered with a triple of her own to give the Senators a lead they would never relinquish. UC did get within one at 63-62 with 7:08 left but the Arrows never could climb over the proverbial hump.
Jorden Lykes led D&E with a 20-point, 15-rebound afternoon and Stephanie Wooten and Baker both finished with 14 points, one more than Ashley Bowles.
Shannon Sword's team committed a season-low eight turnovers which led to 17 more shot attempts than D&E but the Arrows were just 31.6 percent from the floor. The Senators won the rebounding battle 53-50.
The Arrows will return home to start their final homestand of the season. UC will host
Ohio Valley University on Thursday (Feb. 6) at Case Western Reserve University's
Horsburgh Gymnasium.
Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. and Max Radigan will call the action live on the
Ursuline College Sports Network. Additionally, the Pizzazz on the Circle Live Stats will be provided
here.
When these teams got together in Vienna, W. Va., on Jan. 16, UC won 90-71, thanks in large part to a career-high 31 points from freshman wing Tajanee Wells and a career-high 24 points from Huber.
