UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Ursuline College basketball team put up a valiant fight but couldn't get past the visitors from Trevecca Nazarene University in Saturday (Jan. 25) night's Great Midwest Athletic Conference meeting at John Carroll University. The Trojans won the game by a score of 86-75, although it was closer than the final score may indicate.
Nonetheless, the Arrows dip a game below the break-even mark at 8-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play. With the win, TNU remains tied for the G-MAC lead at 7-1 in conference play. The Trojans have won four straight and five of their last six.
TNU led by as many as 12 in the first period but the Arrows went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 1 at 37-36. The teams swapped threes to go into the intermission at 40-39, thanks in large part to 15 first half points from UC freshman forward Tajanee Wells.
The Trojans came out firing and went on a 7-0 run to build an eight-point advantage before the Arrows countered with an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game at 47 with just under 16 minutes to play.
Ursuline didn't take its first lead until the 12:17 mark and held onto a 68-65 advantage with 8:01 left before another 8-0 run from the Trojans. A few stops down the stretch and TNU converting its free throw attempts widened the final margin to 11.
Wells finished with a game-high 24 points and her classmate Erica Huber had 21. Junior forward Emma Ricketts chipped in 10 points to go with seven boards and four steals and freshman guard Jenny Grigsby added 10 points.
Freshman forward Laney Lewis provided a nice spark off the bench with seven points, seven boards, four steals and three blocks in her 27 minutes of action.
Guard Christina Curtner led the way for the Trojans with a team-high 16 points while also pacing the club with nine boards and nine assists. Britt Bell scored 15 points, one more than Haley Felker, and Anna Mitchell chipped in 11 in limited duty while fighting off foul trouble.
Reserve guard Helen Mitchner scored 10 for head coach Gary Van Atta to give the Trojans five players in double figures.
TNU outrebounded Ursuline 35-26 but committed three more turnovers than Ursuline did (19-16). The Trojans shot 51.7 percent (31-60) from the field and drilled 12 three-pointers while the Arrows hit 24 of 55 (43.6 percent) field goal attempts.
The Arrows will begin the second round of conference play on Thursday (Jan. 30) at
Alderson Broaddus University. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. and Alderson Broaddus will provide
