PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Sophomore guard Darria Baker scored a career-high 23 points on 8-12 shooting to lead the Arrows in Thursday’s 69-66 win over the visitors from Salem International.
The win snapped Ursuline’s 12-game losing streak and improved the Arrows to 4-19 overall. Salem International has now dropped eight of its last nine games and sits at 4-21.
In addition to Baker’s career night, seniors Dee Erazo (16) and Laura Campbell (13) scored in double figures, as did sophomore guard Brianna Woods (11).
The Arrows overcame a huge discrepancy on the boards to find a way to win. Salem International outrebounded Ursuline by 15, 35-20. The Fighting Tigers had 16 offensive rebounds that resulted in 16 second chance points while the Arrows had just one put-back bucket all night.
Salem International took a 38-36 lead into the break after Whitney McCargo beat the horn with her three-pointer. The Fighting Tigers entered the game shooting 18 percent from three-point territory but connected on five of 12 threes on Thursday.
Down the stretch, Ursuline made plays when it had to. SIU’s Shakinah Haggins hit a field goal to tie the game at 61 with 2:37 remaining. Junior Natalie Cook hit a pair of free throws to give UC a small lead and an Erazo hoop put the Arrows up by four, 65-61.
Salem International’s Inkera Patterson hit a jumper to cut the lead in half before Baker calmly drilled both free throws with 11 seconds left to grow the lead back to four. Patterson answered with a three-pointer to make it a 67-66 game but Woods iced it with two free throws that ultimately decided the final margin.
On Saturday (Feb. 23), the Arrows will conclude conference play with a 2:00 p.m. game at
Central State University (14-11, 1-6 G-MAC).
Ursuline will attempt to avenge an 84-62 loss suffered at home to the Marauders on Feb. 5.
Max Radigan will call the game live on the
Ursuline College Sports Network while the Ohio Sports Radio Network will also provide a free audio stream, available
