UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Ursuline College basketball team started the Great Midwest Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on the right foot, knocking off Alderson Broaddus University 72-62 on Saturday (Dec. 7) evening at John Carroll University's Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
The Arrows are now 4-3 overall, matching last year's win total in just seven games. ABU, a team picked to finish sixth (one spot ahead of UC) in the G-MAC preseason poll, has now lost its first seven games of the season.
Tonight's win was also the first G-MAC win for the Arrows since they joined the conference prior to last year.
Junior Emma Ricketts, the reigning G-MAC Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week, led UC in scoring for the fourth time this season with her game-high 20 points and also grabbed a game-high nine boards. Freshman Jenny Grigsby and junior Brianna Woods each added 13 points and freshman Tajanee Wells chipped in 10.
Freshman point guard Erica Huber was limited in the first half after two early fouls but responded by hitting six free throws and adding seven rebounds to go with three assists in the second half. Junior Natalie Cook also gave UC a nice lift off the bench and pulled down five boards in her nine minutes of second half action.
Four different Battlers scored 11 points in the game and local product Nautica Davis scored nine.
UC held a 43-42 lead at the break before both teams went cold from the field in the second half. Both clubs shot 25 percent in the second stanza but UC won the period 29-20 to earn the 10-point victory.
Shannon Sword's team won the rebounding battle 46-33 and had 20 offensive rebounds that led to 12 second chance points. The Arrows had a significant advantage in points in the point, outscoring the Battlers 32-16.
Ursuline is idle from competition until next Saturday (Dec. 14) when
