Box Score

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Five Arrows scored in double figures as Ursuline College defeated St. Joseph's College, 87-64, in a non-conference game on Tuesday (Dec. 17) night at John Carroll University.

The 87 points were the most scored by UC since head coach Shannon Sword took over the program prior to the 2012-13 season. Freshman Erica Huber led the way with 23 points, the most an Arrow has scored so far this season. Sword's club played good team basketball and distributed a season-high 20 assists and knocked down a season-high nine three-pointers.

Most importantly, the win improved Ursuline to 5-4 overall and surpasses last season's win total in just nine games. SJC fell to 2-4 overall with the two wins coming over Great Midwest Athletic Conference members Central State University and Kentucky Wesleyan College.

UC held a 17-point lead (45-28) at the break after four players scored at least eight points in the first 20 minutes. Freshman Jenny Grigsby had 10 in the opening period while Huber and her classmate Tajanee Wells each went for nine, one more than junior guard Brianna Woods.

The Arrows led by as many as 30 in the second half after Wells connected on one of her four three-point makes to put UC up 64-34 with 14:21 remaining. The pesky Pumas wouldn't go away and got within 15 at 69-54 with 6:23 left after a 20-5 run. Woods drilled a three to spark a mini-UC run and then the Arrows won the last few minutes to preserve the victory.

In addition to Huber's 23, Wells equaled her career-high with 21 points and classmate Laney Lewis, who also grabbed a career-high nine boards, scored 13 (nine of which came at the free throw line) to reach double figures for the first time in her young career. Grigsby's 12 points helped the freshmen total 69 points.

Rookies Natalie Nickol and Delayne Seigla also contributed valuable minutes off the bench.

Not to be outdone by the youngsters, Woods scored 12 points and added five assists and two steals.

Jasmyne Reynolds led the Pumas with 15 points and Courtney Kvachkoff and Tonisha Sanders scored 14. Other than that trio, no other SJC student-athlete scored more than six points.

The Arrows will head to the road for the West Virginia State University Tournament. Ursuline opens with St. Augustine's University (3-4) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 20) night and Max Radigan will call the action live on the Ursuline College Sports Network.
