UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Ursuline College knocked off previously unbeaten Lake Erie College in overtime, 71-66, in a non-conference game Sunday (Dec. 1) night.
UC evened its record at 3-3 while the Storm fell for the first time in six tries. LEC entered Sunday with three wins over Great Midwest Athletic Conference teams and all three games were decided by at least 13 points.
It was a physical affair and 64 fouls were called. The game wasn't necessarily decided at the free throw line as both teams hit 19-32 (59.4 percent) at the charity stripe. Four players fouled out, including three Arrows.
UC also held a slight advantage in the rebounding department, pulling down 42 compared to Lake Erie's 40.
After taking a 32-24 lead into the break, UC led by as many as 15 after freshman Erica Huber hit a free throw to make it a 47-32 game with 15 minutes remaining. UC's lead was seven at 61-54 after junior Emma Ricketts hit a two-pointer with 4:25 left in regulation. LEC responded by going on a 7-0 run to tie the game for the fifth time of the evening with 2:42 left.
Huber hit a pair of free throws to put UC up 65-62 with 1:15 remaining and the Arrows held that lead into the final seconds. Lake Erie had the rock down three and ran a sideline out of bounds play in front of its own bench. Chloe Irish caught the ball in the corner and was fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer. The 57.1 percent free throw shooter calmly knocked down all three and a Hail Mary heave from Huber was off the mark to send us to overtime.
UC won the extra period 6-1 after shooting 6-10 from the free throw line. LEC was 1-6 at the charity stripe in the third period as neither team hit a field goal in the final five minutes.
Freshman Jenny Grigsby led UC with 17 points and nine rebounds, both of which were career-highs. Ricketts and her classmate Brianna Woods also scored 13 points. Woods scored 10 points after halftime and knocked down two big three-pointers. She moved over and handled the point guard duties after Huber fouled out and turned the ball over just twice in her 34 minutes of action.
Irish and Jackie Murray led Lake Erie with 13 points each and Sami Narducci chipped in 11.
The Arrows will begin Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday (Dec. 7) against
Alderson Broaddus University. The game, which will be held at
John Carroll University's Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and will be covered on the
Ursuline College Sports Network.
Additionally, the
Pizzazz on the Circle Live Stats will be offered free of charge.
