SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – Earlier this season when the Ursuline College and Notre Dame College volleyball teams got together (Sep. 24), Ursuline won the first two sets before the host Falcons rattled off three straight. It looked like fans were in for another extended match after the two neighborhood rivals split the first two sets on Tuesday (Oct. 29) night, Ursuline winning the first 25-19 before Notre Dame took the second frame 25-22.
Ultimately, the Arrows proved to be too much and they eventually earned 25-19 and 25-15 set victories to knock off the Falcons, 3-1.
The win was Ursuline's 15th of the season (15-13). It was also Ursuline's fifth win it its last six tries. The Falcons, meanwhile, are heading in the other direction. Since Notre Dame beat UC on Sep. 24, the Falcons are 1-10 and currently sit at 3-22 overall.
Ursuline was led by the quartet of freshmen Emily Adkinson and Makayla Windau, junior Molly Hilfinger and senior Alex Leister. That foursome combined for 40 kills, led by Leister's 15 and Windau's 10. Adkinson (.778) and Hilfinger (.400) were extremely efficient as they combined for 15 kills and just two errors in 24 chances.
Hilfinger also dished out 41 assists to pass the 40-assist mark for the fourth time this season.
Junior Kelly Stenger totaled 28 digs to equal her career-high set against Ashford on Oct. 8, 2011. Hilfinger chipped in 16 digs, Windau added 13 and Leister had 11 as all three posted double-doubles. It was the team-high sixth double-double of the season for Hilfinger, Leister's fifth and the third in Windau's freshman campaign.
Tonight's 81 team digs were 17 more than the 2013 Ursuline team had in any other match that was decided in four sets. The eight blocks the Arrows recorded also matched a season-high as Ursuline had not produced eight blocks since the Sep. 28 match against Rochester College.
Notre Dame's Suzanne Morris was credited with 10 kills in the losing effort while Shelby Regiec had 33 assists and 12 digs. Defensively, Brittany Perrott led the way with 26 digs, seven more than Kelsey Swords.
Ursuline has just two "home" matches remaining and those conference contests will be played this weekend at
Laurel School's Lyman Circle campus.
Kentucky Wesleyan College comes to town on Friday (Nov. 1) for a 7:30 p.m. match and the following day, Ursuline will take on
Trevecca Nazarene University at 4:00 p.m.
Both matches will be covered with the
Pizzazz on the Circle Live Stats and Max Radigan will provide free play-by-play on the
Ursuline College Sports Network.
