SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Entering Tuesday (Oct. 16) night's match, the University of California-Santa Cruz volleyball team had won 10 of its last 11 matches. The Banana Slugs showed why and how as they swept Ursuline College to improve to 18-4 overall.
The Arrows lost the three sets 25-13, 25-14 and 27-25 to fall to 10-11.
Ursuline had just 22 kills as a team, eight of which came courtesy of senior Alex Leister. Senior Ashley Reinhart and redshirt sophomore Kelley Plas each distributed seven assists and junior Molly Hilfigner chipped in six in her one game of action.
Junior libero Kelly Stenger was credited with a team-high 13 digs.
Elena Echeverria led the UCSC attack with a match-high 10 kills and Sophie Sieberth (18) and Kaitlyne Fisher (13) combined for 31 assists with Jessica Peng (17 digs) and Fisher (12 digs) leading the Banana Slug defense.
Overall, UC hit .030 while a .550 clip in the first set propelled Cal-Santa Cruz to finish with a .323 hitting percentage.
