SALEM, W. Va. – Ursuline rallied in the second half but couldn’t overcome an early deficit in Wednesday’s 61-45 loss to host Salem International University.
The Arrows sixth consecutive loss dropped the team to 3-13 overall while the Fighting Tigers won their second straight game and improved to 3-14 in the process.
Ursuline trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half before going into the intermission down 30-17. The Arrows fought their way back and got within nine points on two separate occasions. A three-pointer from senior Laura Campbell with 7:27 left made it a 48-39 game but SIU responded with a 13-2 run in the next 3:03 to grow the lead to 61-41, the widest margin of the night.
Campbell led UC with 15 points and Shannon Sword’s team received 11 points and seven assists from sophomore point guard Brianna Woods. Shakinah Haggins led Salem International with 20 points on 10-16 shooting while none of her teammates scored more than seven points.
Size proved to be an issue for Ursuline as the Arrows lost the battle of the boards by 10, 42-32. The Fighting Tigers pulled down 15 offensive rebounds which led to 13 second chance points compared to just three for UC. SIU scored 18 more (26-8) points in the paint than Ursuline did.
The Arrows will re-enter conference play on Saturday (Jan. 26) when they travel to
Trevecca Nazarene University (13-6, 3-0 G-MAC) in what will be a re-match of last Saturday’s (Jan. 19) contest won by the Trojans. TNU had its eight-game winning streak stopped on Tuesday at the hands of Campbellsville University.
Saturday’s tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) and the game will be covered with live audio, stats and video, all available by clicking
