Franciscan University Dual Meet Results

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Ursuline College swimming team finished its regular season with a 95-89 loss to host Franciscan University on Friday (Jan. 18) evening. The Arrows don’t have any divers on the roster and the Barons earned 22 points in diving events alone. Nonetheless, Ursuline will head into the Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships with a record of 1-8.

Friday’s meet started strong as UC took the 200 yard medley relay in 2:03.58 to jump out to an 11-0 lead. The lead grew after junior Lauren Sharnsky picked up nine points with a victory in the 1,000 free by turning in her top time of the season (12:37.83).

Franciscan took four of the next five individual events (including one diving contest) as the Arrows snuck in a win from freshman Danielle Reed in the 200 yard IM (2:25.70).

Senior Kristina Valentic snapped the Barons run when she was the first to touch in the 100 free (1:02.27). Reed followed that up with her second victory, this time in the 100 back (1:05.87). Junior Danielle Szczypkowski (5:55.83) and Sharnsky (6:15.86) kept the good times rolling when they were the first two to cover 500 meters and picked up a big 13 points to support the UC cause.

Franciscan’s Kellie Rankin added nine more points in the final diving event of the night to give the Barons the lead again, but UC took it back when junior Allie Butta took first (1:15.55) and Valentinc placed third (1:24.49) in the 100 breast.

The final event of the night, the 200 free relay, went to Franciscan in 1:57.15 and that decided the meet.

Adam Katz’s team will now turn its attention to the Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships, held Feb. 14-16 in Union, Ky.
