Ursuline ends season with loss in the OIC tournament

Ursuline College basketball closed out its 2011-12 season with a first round loss to #2 seeded Notre Dame College in the first round of the Ohio Independent Championship Tournament on Tuesday evening, falling 84-59. Katie Cappello led the way for the Arrows with 17, moving into third place for points in a single-season in team history, with 425 points.

In the first half, the Arrows utilized a 10-2 run to gain their largest lead of the game, leading 21-13. However, the Falcons answered with a 12-2 run over their own to regain the lead at 25-23. The two teams played even to close out the final minutes of the half, going into the locker rooms tied at 29.

Notre Dame came out strong in the second half, beginning with a 9-0 run and just seemed to hit every shot they took. Ursuline was able to cut into the lead early with back-to-back three pointers by Michele Hare and Laura Campbell, but once again Notre Dame answered with a pair of three pointers to regain the nine point advantage.

At that point the Falcons didn’t look back pushing the lead to 20 points with eight minutes remaining using the full-court pressure to force 10 early turnovers by Ursuline. Despite scoring 30 in the second half, after scoring 29 in the first half, Ursuline fell behind as Notre Dame stormed out and scored 55 points in the second.

Laura Campbell and Michele Hare scored in double figures with 15 and 11 points respectively. Natalie Cook had a game-high nine rebounds and a team-high five assists.

The Arrows finish their season at 6-21, while Notre Dame will advance to the second round of the OIC tournament, hosted by Cedarville University this weekend.
