Arrows Earn First win of 2012-13 Season at Bethany Tri-Meet

Bethany College Tri-Meet Results

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Ursuline College swimming and diving team picked up its the first win of the season on Saturday (Dec. 1) afternoon in Bethany, W. Va. The Arrows beat Penn State-Altoona 48-44 and fell to host Bethany College 54-43 during the tri-meet that was held at the John J. Knight Natatorium.

The Arrows are now 1-4 on the year while Saturday represented the first victory for new head coach Adam Katz. Bethany improved to 6-2 and Penn State-Altoona wrapped up the day still in search of its first win of the season at 0-6.

Junior Lauren Sharnsky – fresh off the volleyball season – started the day for UC with a victory in the 1,000 free. She clocked in at 13:16.04 while the next closest competitor was Bethany’s Katie Woeckener who finished in 14:46.03.

The Arrows widened their lead in the 200 free when senior Kristina Valentic won the race in 2:15.58, narrowly beating Bethany’s Melissa Davis (2:16.22). UC junior Allie Butta finished third (2:19.05) to pick up points for the cause.

In the 50 free, junior Danielle Szczypkowski took third (27.84) and freshman Kaylee Ruiz (30.10) placed fifth. That duo came back to take fourth and fifth in the 100 free: Szczypkowski finished in 1:00.81, one spot ahead of Ruiz (1:07.30).

Freshman Danielle Reed came up huge down the stretch run with a pair of victories. She won the 200 yard IM in 2:20.94 to best the rest of the field by almost three full seconds and then returned to take the 100 back in 1:04.91. In the 100 back, Valentic touched third (1:15.75) to give UC two of the top three finishers.

Sharnsky concluded her day with a second place showing in the 500 free (6:35.78). Her contributions were clearly felt in what was her first meet of the season since the volleyball season ended in the middle of November.

Butta swam her last individual race of the day in the 100 breast and took third with a 1:15.25. She came back as a part of the victorious 200 free relay team that won the race in 1:50.29.

Szczypkowski swam first with a 27.44 split before giving way to Valentic who had Ursuline up almost 15 seconds through 100 yards. Butta did her part and then Reed finished with a team-best 26.10 split and Penn State-Altoona’s foursome was more than 20 seconds behind.

Ursuline is off from competition next weekend but returns to the waters on Dec. 16 with a tri-meet against Baldwin-Wallace University and Defiance College – an opponent UC lost to by just 11 points on Oct. 27 - in Berea, Ohio.
