Hiram Dual Meet Results

HIRAM, Ohio – The Ursuline College swimming and diving team suffered a narrow defeat on Friday (Nov. 9) evening, coming up on the wrong end of a 94-79 decision at Hiram College’s short course natatorium.

With the loss, the Arrows slip to 0-3 after a pair of losses at the Defiance College Tri-Meet on Oct. 27. The Terriers picked up their first win of 2012-13 after starting the year 0-4.

The night started with the Arrows taking the 200 meter medley relay in 2:12.84. Freshman Danielle Reed swam the first leg in 32.91, besting the leadoff swimmers from the two Hiram quartets by almost five seconds. Junior Allie Butta widened the lead with the quickest second split before freshman Ali Salyers (31.32) and junior Danielle Szczypkowski (29.97) won their respective legs to earn the team 11 points right off the bat.

After Hiram took all 13 available points in the 800 free, Ursuline responded with a one-two finish in the 200 free. Senior Kristina Valentic won the event in 2:32.74 to pick up nine team points and freshman Kaylee Ruiz earned four team points with a 2:50.04.

Salyers followed that up with a win in the 50 free, touching in 29.65 while Szczypkowski finished in 31.33 and was awarded four points.

Reed went on to win two more races, taking both the 100 back (1:11.07) and 100 breast (1:25.40). In the 100 back, her time was more than 11 seconds quicker than her three opponents from Hiram. In the 100 breast, she was two seconds ahead of Butta – who placed second – but 10 full seconds ahead of the three challengers from Hiram.

Valentic picked up another big 13 points for UC when she covered the 400 meter free in 5:27.19.

The Arrows are in action again three weeks from tomorrow when they take on Bethany College and Penn State-Altoona at 1:00 p.m. in West Virginia.
