PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The Ursuline College volleyball team fell to conference foe Urbana University in straight sets on Friday (Nov. 2) night. Set scores were 25-19, 25-21 and 25-21.
The Arrows are now 6-28 overall and 2-6 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference while the Blue Knights picked up their 10th win and improved to 10-19 overall and 5-2 in the G-MAC.
Ursuline certainly had its chances as the Arrows held a 17-11 lead in the first set. The teams split the next two points to give UC an 18-12 lead but then Urbana rattled off the next 10 points to take a 22-18 lead en route to a first set victory.
In the second set, Ursuline fell behind early at 8-2 but fought all the way back to make it a 20-18 game before falling in the 2-0 hole. In the final set of the evening, the score was knotted at 20-20 before Urbana closed on a 5-1 run.
Both teams committed 13 attack errors, but Urbana slammed home 48 balls to finish with a .243 percentage while Ursuline hit at a .185 clip. Urbana’s Kelsey Volkmer led all players with 20 kills while Ursuline junior outside hitter Alex Leister was the only other player to reach double-digits in kills with 13.
The Blue Knights received kills from six players in total, but a handful of student-athletes contributed at least five kills. After Leister, Ursuline received nine kills from sophomore Brittany Kempf (.500 hitting percentage) and eight more from junior Maureen Kelly.
As a team, Urbana had 46 assists – 37 of which came from Mary Hendricks. Her counterpart – UC junior Ashley Reinhart – was credited with 33 helpers.
Defensively, five Arrows recorded at least 10 digs with sophomore Kelly Stenger digging out a team-high 21 balls. Kaitlin Kremer led all players with 22 digs as she was one of four Urbana student-athletes to reach double-digits in scoops.
The Arrows will conclude the regular season with a re-match against
Edinboro University at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 6) night. The Fighting Scots won the first meeting between the two teams by a score of 3-2 back on Sep. 11.
