NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Senior Laura Campbell caught fire with five first half three-pointers and junior guard Katie Cappello chipped in 14 points but Walsh University won its home opener over the Arrows, 63-50.
The loss was Ursuline’s third in a row against a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while Saturday’s contest was the first of the 2012-13 campaign for the Cavaliers.
Turnovers had hindered UC in the first two games of the season but weren’t much of an issue on Saturday. Behind Campbell’s hot start and the team shooting 60 percent (6-10) from three-point territory in the opening half, the Arrows went into the intermission down 36-30.
The shots didn’t fall quite as easy in the second frame. Perhaps it was the lack of depth (four players logged 35+ minutes) as the team fights off the injury bug, but UC converted just six of 23 (26.1 percent) field goal attempts in the second period. Walsh made 11 field goals in the final stanza and received 11 second half points from Lydia Corle to put the game out of reach.
Walsh won the battle of the boards, 42-26. The Cavaliers had 16 offensive rebounds and as many defensive rebounds (26) as the Arrows had total boards. Campbell, Cappello and senior Dee Erazo were all credited with six rebounds to lead the way for UC.
Ursuline’s next game will be Wednesday (Nov. 21) night at 7:00 p.m. in Erie, Pa. against
Gannon University. The Lady Knights are 3-1 after last night’s victory over Seton Hill University and ranked No. 15 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll.
Wednesday’s game will have
free live stats and a
live video feed available for $7.00. Max Radigan of the Ursuline College Sports Network will also provide free live audio, available
here.
NOTE: After scoring 17 points, Campbell has exactly 1,100 career points and has moved into third place on the all-time Ursuline scoring list.
