FINDLAY, Ohio – Too many turnovers cost the Ursuline College basketball team a chance to pick up a road win on Wednesday (Nov. 14) evening as the Arrows lost to the University of Findlay, 91-49.
With the loss, Ursuline fell to 0-2 on the young year. The Oilers - picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division after finishing 15-12 last year – are 1-0.
Findlay extended pressure the full length of the court in the early going and the Arrows turned the ball over 18 times in the first 20 minutes to dig themselves into a 54-20 hole at the intermission. Ursuline committed 13 more turnovers in the second half while the forcing just nine UF miscues in the game.
The Arrows shot 40 percent from the field, not too far off Findlay’s 44.3 percent showing. The host Oilers, however, attempted 29 more shots than Ursuline and drilled 10 three-pointers while UC was just 3-10 behind the arc.
Senior Laura Campbell scored a team-high 15 points and junior Katie Cappello chipped in 10 but Ursuline couldn’t keep up with the high-scoring Oilers. Findlay was led by 24 points from Kayla Brown, 22 of which came in the first 20 minutes when she was 9-11 from the field.
For the second time in as many games, Shannon Sword’s team did a fair job on the boards. Findlay narrowly won the rebounding battle, 41-38. Senior Dee Erazo led the way with a game-high eight boards, four of which came on the offensive end.
Sophomore Brianna Woods pulled down six rebounds of her own to pair with her six points and four assists.
