Arrows Turn it On To Sweep Kentucky State University

The Ursuline College volleyball team had much to celebrate on Thursday night during a three-set victory over Kentucky State.

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio ­– After a hotly-contested first set, the Ursuline College volleyball team kicked it into gear and dominated the final two games in a three-set victory over visiting Kentucky State University on Thursday (Oct. 25) night.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-15, 25-12. With the win, the Arrows jumped to 5-26 overall while the Thorobreds dropped their eighth straight match and fell to 12-21.

Ursuline hit at just a .061 clip in the first set while Kentucky State finished the first game with a .107 hitting percentage. KSU’s Catrina Willis and UC’s Maureen Kelly each started strong with six kills but it was Kelly’s team who got to 25 first.

The Arrows turned it on in the second set behind junior Alex Leister’s five kills. As a team, the Arrows hit .417 in the second stanza while Kentucky State limped to a .071 percentage. Ursuline closed it out with six more Leister kills and a team hitting percentage of .367 in the third set.

Sophomore Brittany Kempf continued to impress. In addition to her 2.5 blocks, she had five kills – including some shots with authority – to mark the fourth straight game in which she recorded at least four kills. During that spand, the Arrows have complied a 2-2 record while Kempf has hit .350.

Junior setter Ashley Reinhart turned in 31 assists, marking the seventh time this season that she has recorded at least 30 helpers. Sophomore libero Kelly Stenger continued to lead the defense as she finished with a team-high 12 digs.

After six straight home matches, Ursuline will leave the friendly confines of the Matthew J. O'Brien Athletic Center for two matches on Saturday (Oct. 27) at the Case Western Reserve University 'Dig for a Cure Tri-Match.' The Arrows start the day with an 11:00 a.m. match against the host Spartans (21-9) before a 1:00 p.m. contest with Kenyon College (3-17).
