PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The Ursuline College volleyball team was unable to carry momentum from Wednesday’s victory over Oberlin College into Saturday evening’s contest against Fairmont State University, a match the Arrows lost 3-0. Set scores were 25-23, 25-18 and 25-9.
With the setback, the Arrows are 3-24 overall (1-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference) while Fairmont State won its 11th straight match to improve to 17-5 overall. The Falcons have not lost since Sep. 15.
Ursuline challenged to the bitter end before dropping the first set and built an early 15-6 lead in the second set in an effort to even the score. After a Fairmont State timeout, the Falcons fought back with the next eight points to pull within one. Ursuline ended the eight-point streak to make it 16-14, but the Falcons pieced together another eight-point run to pull ahead 22-16 and make the lead insurmountable.
The Arrows totaled 16 kills in the match, six of which came from junior Maureen Kelly. Her classmate Alex Leister chipped in three kills while junior Heidi Mervar and sophomore Brittany Kempf each had two.
Fairmont State’s Bri Swann had a match-high 12 kills and she was one of five Falcons with at least five kills in the contest, most of which were a part of setter Jessica Mango’s 37 assists.
Junior setter Ashley Reinhart assisted on 12 of the 16 UC kills while sophomore libero Kelly Stenger paced the defense with 16 digs, three more than Leister and freshman Jaclyn Brandt.
Ursuline will take tomorrow off and then look to bounce back on Monday (Oct. 15) when they take on
Central State University. When the two teams met on Sep. 21, Ursuline won the match 3-0.
