Ursuline survives with a 47-45 win at Salem International

The Ursuline College basketball team (6-8) extended its win streak to three games, with a 47-45 victory on the road at Salem International. The Arrows started strong, going up by as many as 14 points in the first half, but needed a 8-0 run to close out the game and leave town with the slim two point victory.

Ursuline led at halftime, 29-18, but quickly found itself trailing 45-39 as Salem came out and played a physical second half. In a span of seven minutes in the middle of the second half, the Arrows led 37-30, meaning the Tigers rattled off a 15-2 run to capture the lead. However, the Arrows responded at the right time closing out the game on an 8-0 run and held the Tigers scoreless over the final six minutes.

For the game, the Arrows shot an impressive 44% from the field, but committed 25 turnovers to allow Salem to get back into the contest. Salem shot just 30%, but managed 17 offensive rebounds and held the overall rebounding edge, 35-30.

Tyler Gassett  and Laura Campbell each scored 12 points for the Arrows, while Gassett added six rebounds. Natalie Cook grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Brianna Woods had five points to go with eight assists, four steals,

Katie Cappello, who entered the game with a five-game streak of scoring 20 or more points, ended with just six points, including the go-ahead lay-up for the victory. She also pulled down three rebounds, had two assists, a blocked shot and a steal.

Ursuline returns home with its three-game win streak on the line, hosting Malone University in the Arrows first Ohio Independent Championship (OIC) action of the season. Malone and Ursuline will play on Saturday, January 14 at 2:00 p.m.
