The Ursuline College Volleyball team (1-2) opened its 2011 season at the Glenville Tournament, hosted by Glenville State College in West Virginia. The Arrows dropped its opening match to Seton Hill, but bounced back to defeat host Glenville in three games, before finishing with a loss to West Virginia State.
In the first match, Seton Hill took the match in four games - 25-16, 21-25, 25-8, and 25-16. The Arrows totaled 17 kills and had fewer errors than Seton Hill (17-16). However, Seton Hill had three players reach 10 or more kills. Defensively, the Arrows had 24 block assists and three solo blocks.
In the second match, Ursuline won in three games - 27-25, 25-18, and 25-20. The Arrows had just 13 kills, with 12 hitting errors - though they took full advantage of 24 errors by Glenville State. Ursuline also recorded an impressive 51 digs to just eight for Glenville in the match.
In the third match, W.Va. State won in four games - 25-22, 15-25, 25-22, and 27-25. UC totaled 23 kills, but had 32 hitting errors, while W.Va. State had 44 kills. Ursuline had a team-high 50 assists in the match, but were out-dug 108 to 15.
On the weekend,
Alex Leister led the team in kills in each of the three matches, totaling 17 for the weekend.
Kelley Plas had a team-high 23 assists in the loss to West Virginia State, she also totaled 23 digs on the weekend.
For her efforts on the weekend, Leister was named to the Glenville State College All-Tournament Team.
The Arrows will return to action this week with two home contests. On Tuesday, John Carroll will come to the O'Brien Athletic Center to take on Ursuline starting at 7:00 p.m. Then on Thursday, UC will welcome Central State at 6:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the UC Sports Network and are scheduled to provide live in-game stats.
