Pepper Pike, OH--The Ursuline College soccer team opened its home schedule in dominant fashion Saturday, earning a 4-0 shutout victory over D'Youville in a non-conference matchup.
The Arrows (1-1) and Saints battled to a scoreless first half, with Ursuline holding a slim 6-5 advantage in shots.
Ursuline broke through early in the second half when a D'Youville handball awarded the Arrows a penalty kick. Fiona Rombach converted the opportunity to give Ursuline a 1-0 lead.
Less than eight minutes later, the Arrows doubled their advantage. Loreley Maier headed home a corner kick from Dora Peszlen to add insurance.
Ursuline continued to apply pressure, and eight minutes later Maier found Briana Reynolds, who finished the chance to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Arrows added even more insurance in the 82nd minute when Samantha Youngs scored an unassisted goal to cap the scoring.
The Arrows controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting D'Youville 14-7. Ursuline's defense was particularly dominant, holding the Saints without a single shot on goal.
Ursuline also controlled the set-piece opportunities, earning 10 corner kicks compared to just three for D'Youville.
Maier and Youngs paced the Arrows offensively with three shots apiece, while Peszlen added two shots.
With the victory, Ursuline earns its first win of the season and opens its home schedule with an impressive shutout.
Up Next: Ursuline travels to Midland, Michigan, next Thursday for its Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener against Northwood. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
