Softball Senior Day Come Back to Split With Tiffin

The Ursuline College softball team celebrated eight seniors on Friday evening in their double-header match up versus Tiffin University. They split with the dragons losing game one 0-1 and winning game two 9-6.

The Arrows played a great defensive game throughout the seven innings of game one. Fielding, UC had 21 total putouts as a team, allowing just one run in the fifth inning. With 27 at bats, Nicole Rawlings allowed just six hits, one run and two walks with three total strikeouts. The Dragons were able to walk away with the 0-1 win in game one.

Ursuline came back fighting in game two. After the Dragons tallied three runs in the top of the first inning off a homer, Fessler and Backherms singled to put themselves on bases to open up the Arrows batting. Baratta stepped up to bat and got the first RBI for UC when Fessler ran home. Next, Herrera sent a ball sailing to triple and earn two RBI's on Backherms and Baratta. Hicks had a sacrifice fly to follow, where Herrera scored the final run of the inning to bring the score to 4-3.

The next three innings resulted in just one run for both teams, Tiffin getting the game tying run in the top of the fourth and adding in two more at the top of the fifth to lead 4-6. After a pitching change midway through the top of the fifth, the Arrows went up to bat to score four runs. Evelyn Vallejo scored the first of these runs while pinch running for Backherms off a single from Zientek. The second came off of a triple from Herrera where Zientek ran home. A mid-inning pitching change for the Dragons didn't slow down the Arrows as Hicks earned an RBI off a run from Herrera. The final run of the inning came from Ferretti as she hit a home run on her senior day to bring the score to 8-6.

The Arrows scored just one more run when Baratta ran home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth. The Dragons were unable to answer in the seventh inning, solidifying the Arrows 9-6 win. Zientek picked up the win and save for the Arrows, allowing four hits, one run and one walk with one strike out.

Ursuline is scheduled to compete again this Saturday, April 16th at 2:00 and 4:00 pm versus Walsh University.
