The Ursuline College softball team rallied for a come-from-behind win over the second seeded Hillsdale Chargers on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the G-MAC Softball Tournament hosted by the University of Findlay.
Trailing 1-0, Ursuline tied the game in the second inning after
Maddie Fields started things with a leadoff base hit.
Kiley Gallagher followed with a base hit and
Emily Shrader grounded out to move runners to second and third. Pinch runner
Matyson Michalski scored on a wild pitch to even the score.
It was Fields who gave the Arrows offense a huge boost in the top of the third inning. With two outs,
Alyssa Baratta singled and
Nicole Rawlings reached on a base hit to set the stage for Fields. On a two-strike pitch. Fields connected on her first home run of the season over the center field fence to put Ursuline in front 4-1.
The Arrows tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning after Bartatta picked up her second hit of the day and Fields drew a walk. Gallagher then doubled to score Fields and Baratta but was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple.
Hillsdale's offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth inning for seven runs to take an 8-6 advantage.
Ursuline did not back down with only three-outs remaining and trailing by two runs.
Sara Fessler picked up a one-out double down the left field line and Rawlings drove her in with a single to right field to make it 8-7. Fields delivered in the clutch again with a single and Gallagher drove in a run with a single that hugged the right field line to tie the game 8-8.
Pinch hitter Adrianna Nicon put Ursuline in front with a base hit to cetner to score pinch runner
Ashley Buttolph and put Ursuline back in front 9-8.
Kelsey Jakosh allowed a base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning but retired then retired the Chargers to preserve the win.
Fields and Gallagher each had three hits for Ursuline while Baratta, Fessler and Rawlings each had two for the Arrows who finished with 15 hits as a team.
