Arrows Sweep Storm in Key Great Midwest Doubleheader

The Ursuline College softball team picked up a pair of key wins in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Lake Erie on Sunday afternoon.

In game one, junior Nicole Rawlings was dominate in the circle allowing just one hit, a single in the seventh inning, as she picked up the victory.

Ursuline scored in the bottom of the first inning after Sara Fessler doubled to left center field and Alyssa Baratta followed with an RBI single to center field that scored Fessler to make it 1-0.

The Arrows tagged on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth and sixth inning. Kiley Gallagher picked up a one out double to right center field and came around to score when Jovanna Herrera also doubled to right center to make it 2-0.

Fessler started the home half of the sixth inning with a bunt base hit and Baratta delivered the third Ursuline double of the game that scored Fessler to make it 3-0.

Rawlings went the distance and struck out a season-high seven batters and walked just two. Fessler, Baratta and Gallagher each had two hits in game one.

In game two, the Arrows took the early lead once again and the pitching made it stand up. Jovanna Herrera drew a leadoff walk and Fessler moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. Herrera made a heads up base running play by going first to third on the bunt. Baratta drove in a run with a base hit that dropped into center to make it 1-0.

The 1-0 lead held until the top of the seventh inning when Lake Erie loaded the bases and eventually tied the game 1-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Savannah Hicks delivered a pinch-hit double to right center to put the winning run into scoring position. Herrera laid down a perfectly placed bunt that led to a Lake Erie throwing error which allowed Hicks to score the winning run.

Ashlee Zientek went four shutout innings and allowed three hits while striking out two. Tara Backherms tossed two innings of one-hit relief and did not allow a run. Rawlings picked up her second win of the day with one inning of relief while striking out two.

Ursuline will travel to Findlay on Monday for a doubleheader with the Oilers. First pitch of game one is slated for 4:30 PM.
