The Ursuline College softball team split a non-conference road doubleheader against West Virginia Tech University on Monday afternoon.
The Arrows took came one 7-6 and fell in the second game 4-2.
Ursuline jumped in front in the third inning after
Matyson Michalski was hit by a pitch and
Sara Fessler reached on a bunt to put two runners one with no outs.
Tara Backherms followed with a double to right-center to score Fessler to make it 1-0. With the bases loaded,
Ashley Buttolph was hit by a pitch to score Backherms to make it 2-0.
West Virginia Tech answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead, but Ursuline responded in the top of the fourth with two more runs. Michalski got things started with a two-out base hit and Fessler reached base on a bunt.
Brooklyn Miller later singled to score both to put the Arrows back in front 4-3.
With the game tied 4-4, Ursuline broke the game open in the fifth inning with three more runs.
Madison Jakosh reached on a base hit with one out and
Alexis Dye got on after an error.
Kat Ferretti singled to the left side to score Jakosh to make it 5-3. Fessler picked up her third hit of the game to drive in Dye to make it 6-3 and Backherms added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.
Fessler finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and drove in a run. Miller had a hit and drove in a pair of runs while Backherms finished 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Miller picked up the win with 5.1 innings of work while allowing nine hits and six runs and striking out seven.
Sarah Eschleman picked up her first save at Ursuline with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work.

Ursuline will travel to Urbana University on Tuesday, March 17 for a doubleheader with the Blue Knights.
