The Ursuline College softball team swept a G-MAC doubleheader with visiting Malone on Tuesday afternoon. The Arrows won game one 3-0 and took game two 5-4 in walk-off fashion to complete the sweep.
Â
The Arrows broke 0-0 tie in the third inning after senior
Carly Hoffner drew a one out walk followed by base hits by sophomore
Karlie Wilbur and junior
Rosie Lyard to load the bases with one out. Sophomore
Sadie Jones drove a run with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 1-0.
Â
Ursuline struck again in the fourth inning this time with a solo home run over the left field fence from Wilbur to make it 2-0. The final Arrows run came in the sixth inning after redshirt junior
Brigitte Snow reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Brittany Humbel. Freshman
Brooklyn Miller added a single to score Snow and make it 3-0.
Â
Rosshirt tossed her team-high sixth complete game and third shutout to pick up the win by allowing just three hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters.
Â
Ursuline took an early lead in game two in the second inning after Snow was hit by a pitch to start the frame. After another sacrifice bunt by Humbel, a wild pitch moved Snow to third and Miller once again delivered a RBI base hit to center to make it 1-0.
Â
After Malone tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning, Ursuline answered back with an RBI single from Lyard to make it 2-1.
Â
The Pioneers rallied for three runs on three hits in the sixth inning against Humbel to take a 4-2 lead.
Â
The Arrows pulled a run closer in the sixth inning after Humbel reached out a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Another single by Miller and a throwing error by Malone allowed Humbel to score from second base to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Â
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, junior B.J. Thomas came through with a pinch hit single to put the tying run aboard to start the inning. Freshman
Ellise Presutto delivered the second pinch hit of the inning to move Thomas to second and Lyard moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Jones notched the third Arrows hit of the inning to tie the game with a single to right center that scored Thomas.
Â
Rosshirt picked up the game-winning single back up the middle to score Presutto and give the Arrows their first walk-off win at home this season.
Â
Humbel started the game and went six innings and allowed five runs, four earned on nine hits while striking out six. Rosshirt picked up the win in relief with a scoreless inning in which she allowed two hits and struck out one.
