The Ursuline College softball team swept its home opening doubleheader against visiting Oberlin College on Wednesday afternoon. The Arrows won game one 6-2 and took the second game 8-1.
The Arrows (4-7) struck for three runs in the first inning after senior
Alison Porter drove in a pair of runs with a single to score sophomore
Leah Leshnack and junior
Kaitlin Krajcik to make it 2-0. Junior
Mackenzie Lebeda followed with an RBI single of her own to make it 3-0.
After freshman
Hannah Trent drew a walk to start the inning and junior
Carly Hoffner lined a single into center field, Leshnack delivered an RBI double to right field to score a pair of runs to extend the lead to 5-0. Junior
Brigitte Snow tripled to the gap in left center field to score Leshnack and make it 6-0.
Oberlin broke up sophomore
Gina Rosshirt's no-hit bid in the fifth inning with a pair of singles and ended the shutout in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to center field by Tori Polaski to make it 6-2.
Rosshirt (2-3) picked up the complete game win with seven solid innings of work. She allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out eight and did not issue a walk.
Leshnack finished game one 4-for-4 and drove in two runs while Snow and Hoffner both had two hits each to lead the Arrows offense.
In game two, the Arrows offense once again struck in the first inning, this time for six runs and did not look back. After Krajcik doubled to left center field, Leshnack picked up her third RBI of the day with a triple to make it 1-0.
Snow followed with a base hit to make it 2-0 and freshman
Sadie Jones drove a double to right center field to make it 3-0. Lebeda also picked up a double to drive in a pair of runs to make it 5-0 and Hoffner finished off the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single to make it 6-0.
After a snow single started the bottom of the second inning, Jones drove in another run with a base hit to make it 7-0. Krajcik added an RBI single to score sophomore B.J. Thomas in the third for the Arrows final run to make it 8-1.
The game was called after the top of the fifth inning due to darkness.
Jones picked up the win with three innings of work allowing one run on two hits while striking out one and not issuing a walk. Junior
Brittany Humbel pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three batters.
The Arrows will travel to Salem, Virginia this weekend to play in the West Virginia Wesleyan tournament starting on Friday.
