The Ursuline College softball team rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the sixth inning to knock of Nova Southeastern University 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in Clearwater, Florida.
The Arrows (2-1) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after junior Brigitte Snow singled and sophomore Leah Leshnack reached on a fielder's choice. Leshnack and Snow both came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Ursuline extended their lead in the fourth inning after freshman Hannah Trent started the inning with a base hit down the left field line. After a base hit by junior Mackenze Lebeda, Trent came into score on a Sharks throwing error to make it 3-0.
Arrows sophomore Gina Rosshirt took a shutout into the top of the fifth inning before the Sharks broke through. After a single, freshman Megan Granito picked up an RBI single to make it 3-1 in favor of Ursuline. Junior Dajia Jones followed with a two-run double with the bases loaded to tie the game 3-3. The next batter, junior Rachel Minier broke the tie with a base hit to put the Sharks in front 4-3.
Ursuline did not waste any time getting the run back. Senior Alison Porter started the inning with a base hit and junior Kaitlin Krajcik and Snow followed with back-to-back singles. Leshnack drove in the tying run with a ground-out to second to tie the game 4-4.
The game remained tied 4-4 into the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Ashlie Brown doubled with one-out after Rosshirt started the inning with a walk. Porter broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to left field to put Ursuline back in front 5-4.
Freshman Sadie Jones notched her first career save by recording the final three outs in the seventh.
Rosshirt (1-0) picked up the victory with six innings of work. She scattered 10 hits and allowed four runs while striking out four and walking three.
Ursuline will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9:00am when they take on Saint Leo.Â
