ATHENS, W. Va. – The Ursuline College soccer team went on the road and knocked off host Concord University by a score of 3-1 on Thursday (Sep. 4) afternoon in what was the season opener for both clubs.
This is the third consecutive year that the Arrows have started a season 1-0 after beating Shepherd University 1-0 in the 2012 opener and topping the University of Charleston 2-1 in last year's lid-lifter.
The Arrows are coming off a 12-8-1 season in which they advanced all the way to the conference final.
UC was picked first in the G-MAC preseason poll. The Mountain Lions, fresh off a 6-9-2 campaign in 2013, were picked fourth in the Mountain East Conference preseason poll.
Ursuline got on the scoreboard first Thursday when sophomore Cassie Cripe scored in the 30th minute. Â That was the only score of the first half, but the Mountain Lions came out of the gate quickly and knotted the match at 1-1 just 1:34 into the second stanza.
Less than five minutes later, UC senior Paige Rowan put the Arrows ahead 2-1 and then junior Vanessa Consiglio, who was credited with an assist on Cripe's tally, put one home herself to give the visitors some breathing room.
UC head coach Jason Kubbins is used to getting production from the trio of Consiglio, Rowan and Cripe. Last year, those three players ranked second, third and fourth, respectively, in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in points.
The defense did a superb job in front of sophomore keeper Helen Jazzar and allowed just five total shots, two of which were off target.
UC will play a road match at
Shepherd University on Saturday (Sep. 6) at 11:30 a.m.
Last year, the Rams came to Pepper Pike and knocked off the Arrows by a score of 2-1 thanks to a pair of goals that came in a 94-second span.
After Saturday's match, Ursuline will play its next nine contests at home.
