PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Senior forward Paige Rowan scored a pair of goals in the first half and the Arrows hung on to beat Walsh University, 2-1, in a non-conference contest held on the Ursuline College campus Thursday (Sep. 11) afternoon.
The Arrows improved to 3-1 overall while the Cavaliers are now 1-1-1. This was the 11th all-time meeting between the two programs and after losing eight straight to start the series, UC has gone 2-0-1 against WU, the alma mater of head coach Jason Kubbins, in the last three seasons.
Rowan scored the first of her two goals 14:37 into the match. Junior Vanessa Consiglio crossed a near-perfect ball from left of the box and Rowan headed it home for her fourth goal of the season. Less than 10 minutes later, Walsh tied it up on a goal by Madison Strausbaugh off an assist from Emily Durina.
The match wasn't tied for long as Rowan scored three minutes and one second later to put the Arrows in front for good. Her conference-leading fifth goal came off a cross from freshman Emily Justus, giving the rookie midfielder from Massillon her first career point.
Ursuline's defense really got it together in the second half and allowed just three Cavalier shots in the second stanza after allowing eight in the first period. Sophomore goalie Helen Jazzar made three stops and the team was credited with a save after junior Lexi Bradford placed her body in the line of fire to save a potential game-tying goal.
Today was the final tune-up before Ursuline enters
Great Midwest Athletic Conference play next Thursday (Sep. 18) against
Kentucky Wesleyan College. The Arrows and Panthers will get started at 4:00 p.m. at the UC Soccer Field and the match will be covered with free live audio on the
