Jason Kubbins VideoPEPPER PIKE, Ohio - The Ursuline College soccer team defeated second-seeded Trevecca University by a score of 2-1 on Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon to capture the program's first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament title.
The Arrows finished the year at 15-4 overall, establishing a new school record for wins in a single season. Trevecca wrapped up its season with a record of 12-5-2.
This was the third consecutive year that the Arrows played for the conference's postseason title but they were finally able to get over the hump to capture the athletic department's second G-MAC title (track and field won the G-MAC title in April).
Senior Paige Rowan scored both Ursuline goals after the Arrows fell behind 1-0. Nicole Reese scored her first goal of the year off an Anna Hoffman cross at 14:28 to put the Trojans in front.
The lead held up until Rowan netted her 16th goal of the year at 33:29 off a pass from sophomore Cassie Cripe. Rowan's second goal came at 37:14 off a ball from junior Vanessa Consiglio, the NCAA Division II leader in assists.
Trevecca had plenty of chances in the second half, some of which hit the crossbar and the posts. UC sophomore keeper Helen Jazzar made big save after big save and seven stops in total. Her counterpart Liz Denton was credited with five saves. Trevecca took 18 shots and Ursuline attempted 12 despite UC holding the edge 9-2 at half.
With the two goals today, Rowan extended her school record to 49 career goals and no other player in school history has more than 46. She also passed Jaimie Grindle to take over the school record in career points (Rowan has 112, Grindle's record was 110). Consiglio finished the year with a program-best 43 points this year and became the all-time leader in career assists (33). No other Ursuline player has more than 20. Her 19 assists this year set a new single season school record.
