WHEELING, W. Va. – The Ursuline College soccer team had scored four goals in its last three matches entering Monday's (Sep. 23) showdown at Wheeling Jesuit University and during that span, the Arrows went 1-2. Things started to turn around on Monday as the visitors put the ball in the net four times in the first half en route to a 4-1 win over the host Cardinals.
With the win, Ursuline climbs a game over the .500 mark at 4-3 while Wheeling Jesuit, losers in four of its last five contests, is now 2-5.
Sophomore Vanessa Consiglio put the Arrows ahead just 5:07 into the match with her third goal of the season off an assist from freshman Cassie Cripe. Consiglio took the pass and dribbled up the left sideline past the defenders to create a one-on-one scoring chance with WJU's goalkeeper Carley Kordas. The battle was won by Consiglio.
WJU's Aubrey Hutchinson took a ball from Jessie Vilkofsky and tied the match in the 15th minute but the resilient Arrows added three more goals before the end of the first half to throw the floodgates wide open.
Junior Paige Rowan scored her seventh goal of the season to put UC on top 2-1 at the 33:08 mark. UC's leading goal scorer is now tied with Cedarville University's Jacoby Ziegler for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference lead. Rowan's latest goal came on a cross from Consiglio, making it the fifth time that she has assisted on a goal by No. 16.
Consiglio has produced at least one point in four of her last five matches and has combined for 11 points during that span while Rowan has 17 points in Ursuline's first seven matches after totaling 14 all of last season.
Cripe and senior Amanda Levaskevich each scored before halftime to earn their first goals of the 2013 season while extending the Ursuline lead. Cripe's goal, the first of her collegiate career, came at 38:22 and Levaskevich scored at 40:07.
Rowan assisted on the Cripe goal by sending the ball long while Cripe streaked down the middle of the field for a wide open goal. Junior midfielder Anna Feitl earned the helper on the Levaskevich goal. Sophomore Giuliana Pugliese took a throw in and put it in front of Feitl who made a touch and a quick cross to Levaskevich who finished.
The Arrows had 10 shots on target compared to just four from the Cardinals. Rookie goalkeeper Helen Jazzar made three saves to put her at 31 stops so far this season.
After three consecutive road matches, the Arrows will return home for Thursday's (Sep. 26) 3:30 p.m. match against
Marygrove College (2-4). Â Max Radigan will call the action live on the
Ursuline College Sports Network.
