OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Ursuline College soccer team went on the road and knocked off Kentucky Wesleyan College by a score of 2-1 on Thursday (Sep. 19) night in what was the Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

With the win, the Arrows improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in G-MAC play while the Panthers dropped their first match of the season and now sit at 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Thursday's win also marked the first conference win for any Ursuline team since the school and conference became active members of the NCAA's Division II on September 1st.

The Arrows and Panthers played a scoreless first half and it remained that way until KWC's Paige Kramer put the host Panthers up 1-0 with a goal in the 52nd minute.

Kentucky Wesleyan held the lead until junior Paige Rowan, the two-time G-MAC Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week, scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1. Sophomore Vanessa Consiglio, who has assisted on at least one Rowan goal in three consecutive matches, dropped it into Rowan who took a touch on a defender and sent a rocket that went through the mitts of KWC goalkeeper Kathryn Dishion.

Less than three minutes later, Consiglio gave the Arrows the lead for good. She dribbled down the left side and beat a defender before playing the ball to the top of the box. From there, freshman Cassie Cripe put a shot on goal that Dishion couldn't handle cleanly and Consiglio poked it in to put the Arrows ahead.

The defense held up over the last 26 minutes and change and freshman goalkeeper Helen Jazzar and company preserved the victory. UC's goalkeeper was credited with four stops while Dishion was forced to make eight saves in defeat.

Ursuline continues its southern swing with a contest on Saturday (Sep. 19) against Trevecca Nazarene University. The match will start at 2:00 p.m. Central Standard Time.
