WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – With 23 minutes to go in Tuesday's (Sep. 10) non-conference match, the Ursuline College soccer team found itself trailing host West Liberty University 2-0. But once the Arrows got over the hump, they got on a roll and scored three goals in less than 14 minutes to knock off the Hilltoppers, 3-2.
The Arrows are now 2-1 on the young year while West Liberty slipped to 1-2.
In the 31st minute, WLU's Allie Roberts scored her second goal of the season to put West Liberty up 1-0. Keiana Palmer widened the gap in the 58th minute when she took a pass from Courtney Webb and beat UC freshman goalkeeper Helen Jazzar in the left corner.
Ursuline wouldn't go away easily, though. Junior Paige Rowan, honored as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week on Monday (Sep. 9), put UC on the scoreboard in the 68th minute when she took a pass from sophomore Vanessa Consiglio and lofted the ball to the top right corner of the goal to beat the WLU keeper.
Rowan then assisted on Ursuline's tying goal when she dribbled down the right side and crossed it to the middle for Consiglio to finish for her first goal of the season.
Consiglio returned the favor in the 81st minute when, off a corner kick, she set up Rowan for the deciding goal. It was the second time in three matches that Rowan notched the game-winner and the second time this year she has scored more than one goal in a match.
Ursuline peppered West Liberty goalkeeper Rachel Coles with 10 shots and she turned away seven. Jazzar made three saves to earn her second collegiate victory between the posts.
The Arrows are idle from competition until next Tuesday (Sep. 17) when they host the
University of Findlay at 4:00 p.m. The match will be covered with free live audio on the
Ursuline College Sports Network.
